Correspondence  (往復書簡) exhibition poster for Arata Isozaki’s (磯崎新) Whitehouse and A83 in New York

Project Description from Departamento del Distrito

In the summer of 2023, four architects from Japan and four architects from North America were invited to experimentally renovate the Shinjuku White House in Tokyo, a modest building that is credited as the first built work of Pritzker Prize laureate Arata Isozaki. Departamento del Distrito was paired with the Fukushima-based practice Korogaro Association to collaboratively investigate the archives of Isozaki and design a site-specific intervention.

My Robot is a mobile support structure. Operating as part furniture and part infrastructure, the installation acts as a literal and conceptual extension of the Shinjuku White House service spaces. Built out of stacked steel profiles and stored in the on-site closet while not in use, My Robot can be rolled out at specific moments in time: to act as a step ladder during installations in the main gallery space; to provide an additional display surface or pedestal when the existing wall space is insufficient; or to extend public programming onto the side street, where it might function as a beacon, bar table, or DJ booth.
